What could be more perfect than a Sunday market five minutes from your front door? With the refrigerator empty and two weeks of cooking a head us of I’m dizzy from the swirling possibilities. The Calvisson market is not big; you can easily walk the entire market in five to ten minutes at a leisurely pace; but big enough to be a bit overwhelming. Six to eight good-sized vegetable stands, three or four cheese purveyors and an equal number selling sausage. Then there are the spice, olive and bread vendors and of course the most important, fish monger.
It’s early June with an ample selection of produce. Not knowing where to start, we buy classic ingredients – tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, red and green peppers, potatoes, onions, carrots, garlic, lemon, olives, etc. We need wine both for drinking and cooking, bread for soaking up the sauces and fruit for dessert. But what should we have for dinner? The mackerel looks good and I seem to remember seeing a recipe with mackerel cooked with tomatoes. An hour later we leave happy carrying two heavy bags back to our apartment.
