Pension Vestergade on the main drag is an atmospheric old mansion run by the charming Susanna who warmly greets new arrivals with the offer of tea or coffee in her lovely and sizable garden.
The smallish but quaint guest rooms all have shared bathrooms. Our room on the top floor overlooking the street was bright and cheerful with a wall of windows that let in the morning light and had a view of the harbor from the side window.
Breakfast includes a basket of Danish breads, a cheese and charcuterie platter with fruit, orange juice and plenty of good coffee. A small selection of buffet items are also available including jams, hard boiled eggs, cereal and yogurt.
The back garden at Restaurant Mumm is one of the better spots for dining on a warm summer evening. While not as elegantly furnished as the interior the garden seating area has plenty of greenery, shaded by a large wisteria, to create a pleasant ambiance.
The short menu includes both fish and beef choices. We opted for the daily prix fixe menu which included a chicken and rice curry soup – a rich and flavorful curry stock with touch of heat – and the local plaice (a type of flounder) served with potatoes and a parsley sauce.
The large portion of fish, pan fried and served whole, was delightfully fresh and beautifully cooked. The parsley sauce was the only disappointment of the evening – both broken and bland.
Arriving and Departing Aero Island with a Car
Several ferries per day (75 minutes) connect Aeroskobing with Svendborg. In summer, if you have a car it’s best to book the journey either on-line or, if you will be renting a car and don’t know the license plate number, by email, as their on-line system uses the plate number as the booking reference and doesn’t handle foreign information, such as telephone numbers. The boarding of cars doesn’t start until 15 minutes before the departure time, so with a reservation there is no need to arrive much before that.
On the island parking was easy and free but we ended up not using the car.
By car Svendborg is just two hours west of Copenhagen and two hours south of Aarhus.
In Svendborg Borsen Restaurant has a nice selection of quality lunch items – salads, sandwiches, burgers as well as heartier meals.
