Drive from Dunedin to the Catlins, NZ

Drive from Dunedin to Catlins

The scenic drive that starts at Balclutha winds through the same type of rolling green pastureland that we’ve been driving through since before Dunedin. It’s a smaller, windier road and therefore perhaps prettier.

Stopped at the Purakanui Waterfall, a 9K drive off the main scenic road, touted in the scenic road brochure as among the most photographed in the world. We had to see it, if not just to find out how many waterfalls you would have to include on the list for this one to make it.

The 10 minute walk down is another one of those pretty rain forest walks that NZ does so well with a great bird serenade in the background.

Purakanui WaterfallThe waterfall itself is pretty enough, but as suspected, not world class.

Cathedral Cave was closed at the time of our visit, maybe due to road construction. Looks like a worthwhile visit. Be sure to check the low tide timetable before you go as it is only open 2 hours either side of low tide.
