Wanting to avoid the nine hour plus journey on public transportation, we rented a car in Milan for the trip through northern Italy. This seemed like a great plan, until we tried to travel from Varenna, at the shore of Lake Como, to Ortisei, our first base in the Dolomites. We had planned to take the scenic route through the mountain, SS38 out of Bormio, but on this Sunday morning the road was closed to all but local traffic and motorcycles. Originally the road was supposed to be closed only until 1PM, but the traffic cop told us it could be until 3PM or later as there were so many motorcycles.
Not wanting to back track all the way to the main auto route, we took a “short cut” on SP29 through the Parco Nacionale dello Stelvio. I doubt that this route shortened the journey as much of it was on a very narrow winding road filled with motorcyclists and bicyclists enjoying a beautiful afternoon in the mountains.
Despite the traffic it was a stunning drive and a great introduction to Italy’s alpine playground.
