The walk around the fortress wall that encloses Dubrovnik’s old town is the city’s top attraction. If you do nothing else you really need to do this walk, at least the highest section at the top of the town, i.e., furthest from the water.
It’s best to start early or late in the day. At 8AM there were few people where we started at the entrance on the east end of the old town and we had the top section mostly to ourselves.
Views were stunning with the sun at our back. When we reached the entrance at the Pile Gate on the west side of the old town we ran into a tour group. We were lucky that there were no cruise ships in town this particular morning.
The walk has interesting views from all sides. Near the back is a surprising section of ruins. According to Rick these are left over from the 1600 earthquake and not the result of the more recent Dubrovnik siege, October 1991 to May 1992, when much of this section of the city was bombed.
There is a map near the Pile Gate that shows just how many buildings were hit. They have done a remarkable job of rebuilding this historic center.
